Redattore held off Hawksley Hill in the stretch to earn a 3/4-length victory in Saturday's $263,750 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IIT) at Bay Meadows. Under Jason Lumpkins, Redattore completed the mile in 1:35.14 on a firm turf course.
Hawksley Hill rallied from fifth to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of pacesetter Kerrygold. Irish Prize, Entochado, Kaibo, Bing Bang, Eagleton, and Fighting Falcon completed the order of finish.
The win is the first American stakes win for the Brazilian-bred, who previously won both a group I and group II race in Brazil. Redattore was unraced during 2000, then made his American racing debut for trainer Richard Mandella on Jan. 4, finishing third in an optional claimer. He was then fourth in the Tanforan Handicap (gr. IIIT) before winning an optional claimer by a length over Fighting Falcon.
Redattore (Roi Normand -- Political Intrigue, by Deputy Minister) was bred by Haras Santa Ana do Rio Grande and is owned by Luis A. Taunay. He earned $137,500 for the win, his eighth in 15 starts.
Redattore returned $19, $7.20, and $4.80 and keyed a $1 exacta worth $28.70. Hawksley Hill paid $3.40 and $2.60. Kerrygold was worth $3.20 to show. (Chart, Equibase
