If the momentum of Millennium Wind's Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) victory can get him to the wire first in the May 5 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), he would be the first horse to win both races since Strike the Gold in 1991. He would also mark the first time one mare produced two winners of the Run for the Roses. Charismatic, a son of Summer Squall and Bali Babe, won the 1999 Derby. At the time Millennium Wind, a son of Bali Babe by Cryptoclearance, was still a yearling. Both were foaled at their breeders' Parrish Hill Farm near Midway, Ky. Unfortunately, Millennium Wind is the last foal from Bali Babe. The mare died in 1999. Bali Babe, a daughter of Drone, was purchased by Tom Roach for $7,700 at the 1987 Keeneland January mixed sale. Three years later she produced her first stakes winner, Tossofthecoin (by Magesterial). Charismatic was her second, and Millennium Wind was her third. Charismatic was bred on a foal-sharing agreement in partnership with William S. Farish.Lee Eaton bred Bali Babe in the name of his Eaton Farms with Red Bull Stable, a partnership of which he was also a member. The mare raced only twice, for Barry Schwartz, then joined her owner's broodmare band until her sale in 1987. Dr. Ben Roach purchased a share in Drone in 1969. The two top horses to come off Parrish Hill Farm, which he owns with his son, Tom, both have Drone as their broodmare sire. Charismatic has already been mentioned, but before his Classic win in 1999, they already had a Classic winner in 1983 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Princess Rooney (Verbatim -- Parrish Princess, by Drone). The following year she won the inaugural Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I). "Any time you get a foal out of a Drone mare, they get some stamina," said bloodstock agent Ray Bell. In 1996 Bell first noticed a grandson of Drone that he recommended to Bob and Beverly Lewis' agent John Moynihan. That colt was Charismatic. Charismatic was purchased by the Lewises privately as a weanling. Millennium Wind, however, was consigned by Parrish Hill to the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale through Lane's End, agent. There his current owners, David and Jill Heerensperger, paid $1.2 million for the colt. That made him one of the top 30 high-priced yearlings to sell at auction in 1999.Charismatic was not Drone's introduction to the Derby. Grindstone, the 1996 winner, is also out of a Drone mare. However, the sire of Millennium Wind hasn't broken his maiden in that race. Cryptoclearance competed in all three of the Triple Crown races in 1987. The son of Fappiano was trained by Scotty Schulholfer for owner Phil Teinowitz. "Crypto," as he is often called, finished fourth in the Derby, only 3 1/4 lengths beind winner Alysheba. He was closer to Alysheba in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), finishing only two lengths behind the winner and second-place finisher Bet Twice. Bet Twice, who also finished second in the Derby, got his revenge in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), and blew away the field which included Cryptoclearance 14 lengths back in second, Gulch a nose back in third, and Alysheba in fourth.Although Mr. Prospector, the sire of Fappiano, is well known for infusing speed into pedigrees, Cryptoclearance's record speaks well of stamina. The averaged distance of his 12 wins was 8.7 furlongs. Although not his richest wins, Cryptoclearance had three wins at the classic 10 furlong distance: first in the 1988 Budweiser-Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (gr. II), then in the 1989 Widener (gr. I) and the Hawthorne Gold Cup. Victory Gallop is the best example to date of that stamina at work. The son of Cryptoclearance and the Vice Regent mare Victorious Lil, Victory Gallop won the 1998 Belmont Stakes to deny Real Quiet a Triple Crown win. Millennium Wind's dosage profile is vastly different than those of Grindstone and Victory Gallop. However, it is similar to Charismatic's. His dosage index of 5.33 puts him over the recommended dosage for winners at the mile-and-a-quarter Kentucky Derby distance, but his 0.97 center of distribution makes is numerically possible. His dosage profile is 12-15-10-0-1. Charismatic's dosage index was 5.22. Grindstone, another grandson of Drone, had a DI of 1.91. Victory Gallop registered 3.27.
