Multiple stakes winner Bwana Bull, who was added to the contenders list for this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) over the weekend, worked six furlongs in 1:14 2/5 at Churchill Downs Monday, April 30.
“He went beautifully, nice and easy,” said jockey Javier Castellano, who was aboard the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained colt for the first time. “I didn’t want to squeeze too much out of him.”
“He is not much of a workhouse, but he finished up faster than he started,” said Joe Fernandez, an assistant to the Northern California-based Hollendorfer. “We wanted him to finish up and that is what he did.”
Owned by Mark DeDomenico, Dan Jelladian, and George Todaro, Bwana Bull posted back-to-back victories in the California Derby and El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) before finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). The Holy Bull colt has a career tally of four wins and three placings in nine career starts, with earnings of $259,962.
