Slew's Tizzy, 40-1 winner of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II), will not run in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) May 5, trainer Greg Fox said April 26.
“We decided to skip the Derby last night, we’ll give him the four weeks between races and run him back in the Preakness (gr.I),” said Fox, who trains the son of Tiznow for owner Joseph LaCombe. “It’s tempting, of course, he’s in perfect shape, but he’s still flesh and blood. In some ways it’s a tough decision to make, in some ways it’s really not; I’ve been to the Derby plenty of times as a spectator and I’ll be back again this year.”
With Slew’s Tizzy off the list of potential Derby starters, Jerry Hollendorfer-trainee Bwana Bull is assured a place in the field as he moves into 20th position with $125,000 in graded earnings.
