Connections of Dreaming of Anna Thinking Kentucky Oaks
The connections of Dreaming of Anna are once again considering the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) May 4 at Churchill Downs for their champion 2-year-old filly.
The team of trainer Wayne Catalano and owner/breeder Frank Calabrese had earlier this year ruled out the Oaks after their star filly finished third in the Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) and was second in the Gaily Gaily Stakes over the turf. Both races were at Gulfstream Park.
"Right now we're on the fence (about the Oaks)," said Catalano. "We want her to work at Churchill Downs and then we will make our decision, but she is doing damn good right now."
If Dreaming of Anna makes it to the Oaks starting gate, she would be the first juvenile filly champion since Silverbulletday to run for the lilies. Silverbulletday won the 1998 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and took the Kentucky Oaks the following year en route to champion 3-year-old filly honors.
The addition of Dreaming of Anna could cause a shake-up in the Oaks starting gate as the field is limited to 14, with 16 fillies wanting to run. If she runs and there are no defections, the Nick Zito-trained Autobahn Girl and Bob Baffert's Tough Tiz's Sis would be denied entry based on graded earnings.
Dreaming of Anna was shipped April 26 from Keeneland to Churchill Downs. She is scheduled to breeze April 28 under the Twin Spires. A decision on whether or not to enter the Oaks will follow the workout.
The change of plans on whether or not to enter the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks came after Dreaming of Anna turned in a stellar breeze over the Keeneland Polytrack.
Dreaming of Anna breezed five furlongs in 1:01 April 14 in her first workout since February. She went seven furlongs in 1:25.20 April 21.
"She is training and acting like she did last year before the Breeders' Cup," Catalano said. "If it worked once before I don't see why it can't work again."
Catalano bred the daughter of Rahy in Kentucky from the Broad Brush mare Justenoughheart. She has earned $1,292,240 with a record of 4-1-1 from six starts.
