Following a win in an allowance/optional claiming sprint Friday at Santa Anita, Peace Chant, whose parents were Breeders’ Cup winners, will probably return to graded stakes competition next month at the upcoming Hollywood Park meeting.
“He’s an exciting colt,” said Peace Chant’s trainer, Richard Mandella. “I’ll probably run him next in the Los Angeles Handicap.”
The Los Angeles Handicap (gr. III), a six-furlong event, is scheduled for May 12. The race also is expected to lure Bordonaro, who won Friday’s Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park.
In Peace Chant’s victory Friday, he came from just off the pace under Victor Espinoza to prevail by one length without being put to a drive in the stretch. The dark bay or brown colt completed seven furlongs in a sharp 1:21.81 as a 2-5 favorite.
Peace Chant previously also had won by one length in 1:15.10 while making his 2007 debut in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance contest March 18 at Santa Anita. He finished second to Too Much Bling in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita early in 2006.
“You know, I’ve felt all along that the way this colt looks, he kind of reminds me of Ack Ack,” Mandella added. Ack Ack was voted Eclipse Awards as champion older male, champion sprinter and Horse of the Year in 1971 when conditioned by Charlie Whittingham.
Bred in Kentucky by Jayeff B Stables, Peace Chant was acquired by his current owner, Jess Jackson (Stonestreet Stable) for $900,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September sale. He is a son of 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner War Chant and 1990 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Safely Kept. Safely Kept was voted the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter of 1989.
Safely Kept won 22 stakes races. Xtra Heat, who registered 25 stakes victories during her career, is the dam of Classic Star Stable LLC’s Southwestern Heat, who streaked to a 13-length maiden victory Wednesday at Laurel in his sixth career start. Southwestern Heat is the first foal from Xtra Heat, who was voted an Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly of 2001.
