(Edited press release)
Sgt. Bert, who holds Keeneland’s 5 1/2-furlong course record, is among the eight sprinters who will meet in the $100,000-added Shakertown (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland April 15, a 5 1/2-furlong race on turf.
Last October, Sgt. Bert set the course mark of 1:01.67 when he won the Woodford Stakes, also at the Lexington track, for the second consecutive year. He has made two previous starts during Keeneland’s spring meet, winning his career debut in April 2004 and finishing sixth in last year’s Shakertown.
Trained by Gary Montgomery for owners C. Gary Edelen and Fred Preuss Jr., the 6-year-old Confide gelding will make his 2007 debut in the Shakertown with Rafael Bejarano aboard.
Another Shakertown starter is Lifestyle, who is exiting a five-furlong allowance victory on turf at Gulfstream. The 7-year-old son of Indian Charlie, who ran sixth in the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I), is seeking his first stakes victory in the Shakertown.
