Groom Stabbed to Death at Gulfstream Park; Teen Arrested

A groom at Gulfstream Park died Tuesday after suffering stab wounds in a dormitory hallway at the track.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, Hugo Garibay, 33, was stabbed by a teenager following a confrontation. The newspaper reported the unidentified teen fled the scene following the early morning incident and was later found at Calder Race Course. It could not be determined whether the suspect worked at either track.

“This tragedy shocks and saddens the racing community at Gulfstream Park,” track president and general manager Bill Murphy said in a statement. As investigation continues, we at Gulfstream Park are unable to comment on or provide any particulars about this case. It’s a tragic fact of life that incidents such as this happen, just as they do in all communities. This incident involved two individuals behind closed doors and we’re doing our best to be of assistance to the Hallandale Beach Police Department. That it would happen here is an aberration.”

An employer found Garibay's body about 6 a.m. and called police, the Sun-Sentinel reported. Garibay, who was stabbed three times, was pronounced dead on the facility grounds, police spokesman Andrew Casper said.

Calder employees called police Tuesday afternoon, saying they believed they found the teen, according to the newspaper.
