Kiaran McLaughlin is headed to Dubai with Invasor this weekend but before he leaves he will lose one of his barns' best bred gallopers, Paullinus, to Australian interests.
The Belmont special maiden weight winner is a regally bred 4-year-old: his parents are both glamorous grade I winners in A.P. Indy
and the former brilliant Lailani (by Unfuwain), a grade I winner in the U.S. and a group 1 winner in Ireland.
Paullinus was bred by and at Gainsborough Farm in Kentucky and has been purchased as a racing and breeding proposition by Australian breeder Bill Benson and partners.
"He will ship to Toronto now and race his way into stakes company up in Canada," said Benson. "You rarely get well topped, good sized stallion prospects with this sort of pedigree. It really is quite stunning and I see Lailani has just had a Kingmambo
foal at Gainsborough so there is every chance the pedigree page can improve further. I can see him winning at stakes level in Canada then either standing there or coming down to Australia.
"We only have one son of A.P.Indy in Australia and he is expected later this year to commence his first stud season. He is Bernardini
and he'll stand at Darley for probably $100,000, so if we can score at stakes level with Paullinus, who like Bernardini is from a grade I winning mare, then he could represent tremendous value as an alternative A.P. Indy stallion."
One of the great attractions to Paullinus, who was fourth at Aqueduct in allowance company earlier this month when trained by McLaughlin, is his Australian connection. He is closely related to the fastest six-furlong horse ever to race in the United States, Keep The Faith (by Sunday Silence). who won an allowance race at the famed old New York track in 1.06.82 and who then was 3rd in the Kelso Breeders' Cup (gr. II) at Belmont over a mile.
Keep The Faith stood his debut season in Australia this year and covered 150 mares.
On top of that, Keep The Faith's 2-year-old half-brother by Dehere is one of Australia's very best juveniles. Pistols is already stakes placed and he is Golden Slipper (Aus-I) bound on March 31.
"Even without all that, Paullinus is a genuine world class stallion prospect on breeding. He will go to Blair Miller's barn in Canada and our fingers are crossed henceforth," said Benson, who owns the sprawling Emerald Thoroughbreds Farm in NSW. He owns over 100 mares, too, which is a good head start for Paullinus when/if he heads to the barn in Australia.
