Tom's Thunder and Lady Katie won divisions of the $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct on Sunday.
Tom's Thunder won the the Times Square division for 3-year-old colts and geldings by 3 1/4 lengths. The favored entry of Deputy Shaker and Redding Woods raced second and third.
Jockey John Velazquez recorded his 2,000th career victory aboard Tomn's Thunder. It was the second straight year and the fourth time in the race's eight runnings that he rode the Times Square winner.
"This is a great milestone for me," said 29-year-old Velazquez. "I'm still young and I've improved my game a lot over the last few years. I still have a long time to ride and I think I'll only get better."
Tom's Thunder, carrying 118 pounds, covered one mile in 1:36.57 on the fast track to earn $60,000 for owners Carol and Herbert Schwartz. The winner returned $5.60, $2.10, and $2.10. The Deputy Shaker-Redding Woods entry paid $2.10 and $2.10.
"His main problem has been changing leads," said winning trainer Scott Schwartz. "He likes to hang on to his inside lead, but today he did that (switch leads) fine. I think he's a better horse on turf than he is on dirt. I'm hoping he'll improve on the turf. He was the most experienced horse in this race, which didn't hurt. It was his third start going a mile and he had a good post. He had a lot in his favor today."
Lady Katie remained undefeated in four career starts, rallying to a 2 1/2-length victory in the Park Avenue division for fillies. Ridden by Edgar Prado and carrying 120 pounds, Lady Katie was timed in the mile in 1:36.28 on a fast track. Bon Fearless was second of five another five lengths ahead of Beijio.
"She broke great and relaxed perfectly," said Prado. "I showed her the stick on the turn and she took off. She's done everything they've asked of her so far."
Lady Katie earned $60,000 for Leonard Liberto and returned $6, $2.30, and $2.10. Bon Fearless paid $2.30 and $2.10 and Beijio was worth $2.10. (Charts, Equibase
