(Edited press release)
The Klein Family Learning Center and the Groom Elite Program will offer a three-day course in “Elite Grooming for Racehorse Owners” for those interested in learning principles of care, management, and training of racehorses.
The course will be offered at sites in Louisville and Lexington March 23-25. Topics include behavior and grooming, horse characteristics, bandaging, legs, nutrition, lameness, and training.
Classes on March 24 and 25 will take place at the Klein Family Learning Center, which is located on the backside of Churchill Downs, and the March 24 class is scheduled at the Groom Elite facility at the Kentucky Horse Park. The March 23 class is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. (all times EDT), while the March 24 class is set for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the March 25 class runs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Dr. C. Reid McLellan, executive director of the Groom Elite Program, will serve as the instructor. McLellan taught college level equine studies for 15 years, trained racehorses for eight years, and has instructed racing fans, owners, trainers, and grooms for 11 years. Mixing a plethora of visual aids with student participation, McLellan provides a fast paced learning environment. As owners increase their knowledge of racehorse care and the rules of racing, they can more enjoyably participate in racehorse ownership.
