Chelsey Flower, a grade I winner and a stakes producer, was euthanized March 14 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington after complications from foaling a Dixie Unioncolt. The colt is doing fine and is on a nurse mare at Bob Courtney's Crestfield Farm near Lexington.

Bred by Hilary Boone Jr., Chelsey Flower raced for several owners. She won the 1996 Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. IT) and Sheepshead Bay (gr. IIT) Handicaps for Farfellow Farms and the 1993 Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. IIIT) for Clanni Gael Stable. Campaigned four years, she won eight of 34 races and earned $568,305.

Chelsey Flower was bought for $1.1 million by J.S. Carrion, Trustee, at the 1997 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, while in foal to Storm Cat. Four of her foals sold as yearlings at auction, and they commanded a total of $2.25 million.

Chelsey Flower (His Majesty--Chelsey Dancer, by Affirmed) produced five named foals, four of which were winners, including French group winner Kentucky Dynamite (by Kingmambo) and stakes-placed Wow (by Storm Cat). She also is the dam of an unnamed Silver Deputy yearling filly. Chelsey Flower . who was 16, is buried at Crestfield.
