Call Me Larry's Maiden Win Benefits Breast Cancer Fight Find A Cure Stable’s Call Me Larry, a big horse with an even bigger purpose, rallied on the turn Saturday afternoon in Aqueduct’s sixth race and collared Jacks Away for a one-length maiden victory. It was the second step in what appears to be a promising career for Call Me Larry, whose owner, Suzie O’Cain’s Find A Cure Stable, will donate 10% of his earnings for breast cancer research. In the second start of his career – he rallied but was beaten three-quarters of a length in his racing debut at Aqueduct on Feb. 10 – the 4-year-old New York-bred son of Rodeo brought jockey Eibar Coa home in 1:11.27 for the six furlongs on the fast inner dirt track Call Me Larry returned $6.70 to win as the post-time favorite. “He is still playing around a little bit, but he’s got nowhere to go but up,” said trainer Leah Gyarmati. “This is such a great cause. Suzie has done such a great job of pulling everyone together. Day in and day out, training can get a little tedious. You’re doing it to make a living, but it’s fun when you’re doing something like this for a good cause. This is a great way to promote racing.” The gelding is named for Dr. Larry Norton, a renowned research physician at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center and the Iris Cantor Diagnostic Center, part of Manhattan’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital. (Chart, Equibase)
