Kalu dueled for the lead with favorite Woody Haze through most of the $100,000 LG&E Energy Forerunner Stakes at Keeneland Friday, but pulled strongly away in the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths.
The 3-year-old colt by Honor Grades out of Barely Rarely is owned by Bonnie Heath Farm of Ocala, Fla., and Robert Schaedle III, a Tennessee real estate broker. He is trained by Christophe Clement. Kalu broke his maiden in his last start, a $20,000 maiden special weight at Hialeah Park. He won by 5 1/4 lengths. Kalu's record is now two wins and a second in four starts.
In the Forerunner Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile test on the grass, Kalu broke cleanly and took the lead early and held it through the first turn. Right next to him and a head behind was Woody Haze. Down the backside, Woody Haze took the lead briefly than lost it to Kalu as they rounded the far turn. Woody Haze again fought back, but Kalu kicked clear for the victory.
"I let him come out and place himself in the race and he was very comfortable where he was -- nice and relaxed," said Kalu's jockey Corey Nakatani. "When Mike (Smith aboard Woody Haze) came up on the outside of me on the back side, I just sat there and was very patient on him. And, turning for home he kicked in."
Kalu crossed the wire in 1:48.73. He paid $10.40, $6.60, and $4.20. In second was Cee Dee who fought back gamely after being pinched back at the break. Cee Dee paid $9.40 and $3.20. Finishing third was Ye of Little Faith who paid $3.20.
In other Keeneland racing news, a 2-year-old Carson City colt named City Street tied the track record for 4 1/2 furlongs in Friday's third race. It was the colt's first start. City Street, who was the favorite, crossed the wire in 51:04. He was ridden by Robbie Albarado and is trained by Ronny Werner, who improves his record at Keeneland to three wins and a third in five starts. City Street came into the race off a bullet four furlong work in :47 4/5 at Lone Star Park April 6 and a sharp three furlong work in :35 3/5 April 13 at Keeneland.
