The Lone Star Park Charitable Foundation for Grand Prairie awarded $90,000 to 16 Grand Prairie, Texas, charities March 7 during a ceremony at the track.
The donations grew $30,000 from the $60,000 awarded last year, thanks to increased contributions in 2006. There has been $370,000 in total gifts to Grand Prairie charities since the foundation was formed five years ago.
"Thanks to a very successful year of fundraising, we're thrilled to contribute $90,000 to the hard-working charities and non-profit organizations of Grand Prairie," said G.W. Hail, Lone Star Park vice-president and assistant general manager. "Our goal is to continue that growth in 2007 as Lone Star Park celebrates its 10th anniversary of live racing."
The first fundraising event this year will be a Lone Star Park 10th anniversary party on April 17 -- the actual 10th anniversary date of the first live race in track history. Another important fundraising event will be the 28th Mistletoe Ball, a holiday extravaganza scheduled for December.
Funds raised at various events throughout the year are annually distributed to local non-profit organizations through grant applications at year's end.
The 16 charities chosen to share in the 2006 gifts were Boy Scouts of America; Boys & Girls Club of Grand Prairie; Brighter Tomorrows; Children First Counseling Center; DeLoach Kidz; Disabled American Veterans, Grand Prairie Chapter 42; Drug Free Youth in Texas; Grand Prairie Arts Council; Grand Prairie Food and Clothing Co-Operative; Grand Prairie Pride Special Olympics; Grand Prairie United Charities; Grand Prairie Wellness Center; KIDS in Need of Clothing; LifeLine Shelter for Families Inc.; Pregnancy Resource Center of Grand Prairie; and YMCA of Grand Prairie.
Lone Star Park has been active in other fundraising efforts, as well. In 2006, the racetrack hosted and assisted in charitable events that raised more than $2 million for Dallas-Fort Worth charities, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, American Diabetes Association and Dallas Symphony League.
