'98 Derby Winner Real Quiet Mending

Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Real Quiet is recuperating at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center following treatment for abscesses in both hind feet. The 12-year-old son of Quiet American was taken there Feb. 19 after showing signs of discomfort after mounting his mares. He stands at Dr. William Solomon's Pin Oak Lane Farm near New Freedom, Pa.

"He's doing well, and looks good and bright-eyed," said syndicate manager Mike Jester March 5. "Dr. (Dean) Richardson is treating his right hind foot with antibiotics to guard against infection. He might be going home soon."

Richardson earlier received acclaim for the way he handled 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands winner Barbaro, who spent months at New Bolton. Barbaro was euthanized Jan. 29 from complications from laminitis.

"It was Dr. Solomon who noticed Real Quiet was a little off in the behind," Jester said. "When he went to breed, he was uncomfortable enough to where he would mount and come off, mount and come off."

Real Quiet, who is out of the Believe It mare Really Blue, is booked to 80 mares this year. His fee is $5,000.
