Buffalo Man, winning the Spectacular Bid Stakes, is off the Kentucky Derby trail due to an injury.

(Edited press release)

Saturday’s $300,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park lost a leading contender when Ol’ Memorial Stable and Ed Glasscock’s 3-year-old Buffalo Man was diagnosed with an ankle injury Sunday morning that will preclude any hopes of staying on the road to the Kentucky Derby  Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

“He took a bad step,” said trainer Cam Gambolati Monday morning. “Fortunately, it’s not life-threatening or anything like that and he should be able to come back. He could make it back sometime in the fall.”

A son of El Prado, Buffalo Man worked five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 at Gulfstream Sunday morning. There were high hopes for his connections after he won his last three starts, including the six-furlong Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 7 and the OBS Championship going 1 1/16 miles at the Ocala Training Center on Feb. 12.
