Longtime Kentucky farrier Errol Bradford died Feb. 20 after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 69.
Born Oct. 31, 1937, in Brown County, Ohio, Mr. Bradford was a resident of Rabbit Hash, Ky.
Fresh out of high school, Mr. Bradford worked two years as a range cowboy for the sprawling TS Ranch in Battle Mountain, Nev. At 19, he joined the International Professional Rodeo Association and for six years competed in bull riding and saddle bronc events.
He completed his apprenticeship as a farrier during that time, launching a 45-year career on the Kentucky circuit that would take him into the barns of some of racing's top stables. Among the recent stakes horses entrusted to his care were Harlan's Holiday, winner of the 2002 Blue Grass Stakes, Florida Derby, and Donn Handicap (all gr. I) for trainer Ken McPeek; Sarava, winner of the 2002 Belmont (gr. I) and also trained by McPeek; and Patrick Biancone-trainees Gorella, winner of the 2006 Beverly D. (gr. IT), and Ball Four, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II).
Mr. Bradford also handled stars of the United States Equestrian Federation, including the world-ranked Grand Prix jumper Charmed. His clients included the Dillard family of Dillard's Inc., the national retailer, who owned Enchanted and Renaissance, both Horse of the Year winners in equestrian disciplines.
Mr. Bradford is survived by his wife, Sissy; their 9-year-old daughter, Cora; and a son and two daughters from a previous marriage. A memorial fund has been established to provide education assistance to Cora. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Benefit of Cora Bradford, PNC Bank, 8810 Highway 42, Florence, KY 41042.
Friends and family are invited to gather at The Barn in Rabbit Hash on Feb. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. At his request, Mr. Bradford's ashes will be scattered at Turfway Park, Keeneland, and River Downs. The Turfway ceremony will be March 1 before the first race.
