(Edited press release)
Jockey Jon Court hopes to continue the success he’s had with the connections of Secret Scheme in Saturday’s grade III Las Flores Handicap for older fillies and mares at six furlongs over Santa Anita’s main track.
Court rode the 4-year-old daughter of Precocity to a third-place finish in the grade I Santa Monica Handicap Jan. 28. It marked a rare venture to Southern California for the Florida-bred, trained by Bay Area kingpin Jerry Hollendorfer.
“I kind of kept her in a spot, and it was a quick pace and it died in front of me,” Court recalled. “I inherited the lead, and she held on gamely down the stretch. I give her a lot of credit running so well in a grade I race in Southern California. It was a valiant effort.
“I’ve won races before for this owner, George Todaro (of Seattle), in California and in Kentucky, and for Jerry as well, so I’m hoping to improve the statistics we have together on Saturday.”
Secret Scheme has a 6-1-1 record from 11 starts, with earnings of $153,550.
