Graded Stakes-Placed Buckland Manor Retired

John Toffan’s stakes winner Buckland Manor has been retired after a fourth-place finish in the Jan. 6 San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II), trainer Paco Gonzalez said.

“He finished fourth in his last race, and (owner John Toffan) said that was it,” Gonzalez said. “He retires completely sound.”

Seven-year-old Buckland Manor won the 2003 Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita Park and also placed in six graded stakes during his career, including the 2005 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (gr. IT) in which he finished a length behind eventual champion turf male Leroidesanimeaux. He also placed in back-to-back runnings of the Oak Tree Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IIT) in 2004 and 2005.

Overall, the chestnut son of Bien Bien banked $519,582. In 29 starts, Buckland Manor had six wins, six seconds, and four thirds.

“He’ll go to stud, but I’m not sure where yet,” Gonzalez said of the horse, who was bred in Kentucky by the partnership of Toffan and the late Trudy McCaffery. “He may go to another country or stay here, I don’t know. But John is going to find the best place for him where he can get the best mares.”
