Roy and Gretchen Jackson and Dr. Dean Richardson, honored with a resolution by the Pennsylvania Senate.

The connections of Barbaro, the deceased winner of last year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), were honored Feb. 5 in a resolution adopted by the Pennsylvania state Senate.

The resolution, introduced by four senators, recapitulated the horse’s career and the efforts of Pennsylvania owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and the veterinary team at New Bolton Center headed by chief of surgery Dr. Dean Richardson to keep the classic winner alive.

A son of Dynaformer who also won the Florida Derby (gr. I) in addition to three other stakes for trainer Michael Matz, Barbaro was euthanized Jan. 29 as a result of injuries he sustained in last year’s Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and a subsequent bout of laminitis.

The resolution read, in part: “Whereas, Barbaro’s achievements highlight the grace and beauty of the horse breeding industry and its importance to this Commonwealth and our agriculture heritage; therefore be it RESOLVED, that the Senate commend Roy and Gretchen Jackson and Michael Matz for their extraordinary commitment to Barbaro and the Thoroughbred industry; and be it further RESOLVED that the Senate commend the New Bolton Center for its outstanding care and treatment of Barbaro…”
