Tattersalls’ February mixed sale in a snowy Newmarket Thursday was topped by a 190,000-guinea Danehill Dancer yearling colt consigned for Laureldean Stud from Paddy Kelly’s Ballybin Stud. Paul McCartan, manager of Denis Brosnan’s Croom House Stud, purchased the colt out of listed-placed Littleton Arwen (by Bahri) after outbidding Coolmore’s Paul Shanahan.
Juddmonte home-bred Eclectic Mix (by Zamindar), a half-sister to group I Cheveley Park Stakes winner Prophecy, is another heading to Ireland. Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock outbid Matt Coleman from the Anthony Stroud agency to purchase the 3-year-old filly for 130,000 guineas.
The sale in England produced a record turnover of 2.268 million guineas along with a new best average price of 11,874 guineas and median price of 5,500 guineas.
"A record top price of 190,000gns, as well as records for average, turnover and median have ensured a more than satisfactory start to 2007," said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. "With uncertainty over the weather and all the local airports closed this morning, we were a little concerned at the start of the day, but there has been no shortage of buyers and the 2007 Tattersalls February Sale has very much followed on from last year’s outstanding December sale, albeit at a lower level.
"The record price for the Danehill Dancer colt out of Littleton Arwen from Ballybin Stud’s outstanding consignment was the obvious highlight of the day, but the most encouraging feature has been the consistent demand from start to finish.
"Buyers from Britain and Ireland have been joined by significant numbers from throughout Europe and further afield and any lot with even a hint of quality has attracted plenty of interest. We are always aiming to expand this fixture,e and the 2007 renewal has confirmed that the February sale has the potential for further growth."
