(Edited press release)
Headed by the $1-million Haskell Invitational presented by Vonage (gr. I) Aug. 5, Monmouth Park will offer $4.4 million in stakes for the 2007 meeting, which runs May 12-Sept. 2 and features 13 graded stakes races.
“The stakes schedule we’re announcing is just the beginning of what will certainly be a tremendous and exciting year for Monmouth Park,” said Dennis Dowd, senior vice president of racing for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns and operates Monmouth Park.
In addition to the Haskell, other highlights of the 2007 Monmouth season are the $750,000 United Nations (gr. IT) July 7, the $200,000 Monmouth Breeders’ Cup Oaks (gr. III) Aug. 12, the $300,000 Iselin Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. III) Aug. 18, and the $300,000 Molly Pitcher Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II) Aug. 25.
Last year, two horses that captured Breeders’ Cup races competed at Monmouth en route to their Breeders’ Cup scores. Miesque’s Approval, the 2006 champion grass horse, won the Red Bank Stakes, while Round Pond, the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) winner, was second in the Molly Pitcher.
Monmouth Park will also host four days of racing in October, headlined by the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Oct. 26-27.
