Henry Moreno, who rode 24-1 Dark Star to an upset win over Native Dancer in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, died Feb. 1 in Florence, Ore., after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 77.

Moreno guided Dark Star to a head score over Native Dancer for owner Harry Guggenheim's Cain Hoy Stable. The loss was the only one in 22 races for Native Dancer.

Moreno also won the 1957 Santa Anita Derby on Sir William.
