J.S. Meredith Dead; Raced Grade I Winner Hawkster

Breeder/owner J.S. Meredith died April 16 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was 67. Meredith, who had been in the medical electronics business in California, bought Hawkster as a yearling for $26,000. A son of Silver Hawk, Hawkster set a world record of 2:22 4/5 in winning the 1989 Oak Tree Invitational Handicap (gr. IT) at 1 1/2 miles and also won four other stakes. He earned $1,510,942.
