Judy's Red Shoes, a Florida-bred millionaire for Cleo and Vivian Hall, died last October at age 23 at the couple's Triple Crown Farm near Lakeland, Fla. The cause of death remains unknown.
Judy's Red Shoes was bred by the Halls and raced for them her entire career. She was named after Vivian Hall, whose middle name is Judy. "I told Vivian, I was going to name the filly for her, and she's going to become a household word," Hall said about the daughter of Hold Your Tricks out of the Exclusive Native mare New Red Shoes.
Judy's Red Shoes certainly became a household name in Florida, achieving legendary status by making all 83 starts in the Sunshine State. She won 25 races and placed in 25 others while earning $1,085,668 in six years of racing. George Gianos trained her in all but four of her starts.
"I wish everybody could have a horse like her and all the thrills that come with it," Cleo Hall said.
After running strictly in maiden and allowance races in her first 10 starts, Judy's Red Shoes raced almost exclusively in stakes. She won 20 added-money races and placed in 22 others.
Unlike some South Florida runners that were withheld from top competition during the prime winter and spring dates, Judy's Red Shoes didn't duck the competition. As a 6-year-old in 1989, she won the La Prevoyante Invitational Handicap (gr. IIT) over Gaily Gaily at Calder Race Course and placed in the Black Helen Handicap (gr. IIT) at Hialeah. At Gulfstream Park that year, she placed in the Buckram Oak Handicap on grass.
As a broodmare at Triple Crown, Judy's Red Shoes produced five named foals, three of which were winners. Her full brother, Judy'sotherbrother, stands at the farm.
Judy's Red Shoes has a turf stakes named in her honor at Calder. She is buried at Triple Crown.
