The Barretts winter mixed sale enjoyed big gains in the gross revenue, average price, and median price during its two-day run that ended Tuesday at Fairplex Park in Southern California. The auction also sold the highest-priced horse in its history, the mare Selvatica, who brought $560,000 during the opening session Monday.

Barretts reported that 438 horses were sold for a gross of $4,180,400. The average was $9,544 and the median was $4,500. Compared to last year's results, when 441 horses were sold, the gross rose 20.1% from $3,481,300, the average advanced 20.9% from $7,894, and the median grew 28.6% from $3,500. The buy-back rate fell from 18.5% to 18.1%.

During Tuesday's session, the 214 horses sold grossed $1,605,800 and averaged $7,504. The median was $4,000.

Retained, a 12-year-old winning Star of the Crop mare that wasn't pregnant, sold for $53,000 to top the final session. She is the dam of stakes winner Ambition Unbridled (by Unbridled's Song). JMJ Racing Stables purchased Retained from Mary Knight, agent for the commercial division of Pepper Oaks Farm.
