Trainer Bob Baffert has been appointed to the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California and will serve as a trainer/owner member, filling a vacant position that expires June 30.

Baffert, currently leading the Santa Anita trainer standings, is the fifth leading conditioner by earnings in the nation. He holds multiple Southern California training titles and Eclipse Awards.

“We are all extremely delighted to have him on board,” said TOC vice chairman Marsha Naify. “Bob will be a tremendous asset to the board. It seems like he will be a real team player, and he is interested in the issues that face our industry,” Naify said. “Among his main concerns are track surfaces and the safety of the horses. In addition, he wants to see the industry much less divided and much more unified.”

“I’m excited about being on the TOC Board and think I will bring a new perspective and racing experience to the table,” Baffert said. “California is still the best place to race, and also the toughest. I think I have a lot of experience in racing to offer, and hope I can contribute positively to the board.”
