Alfred J. "Alfie" Bellew, believed to be Thoroughbred racing's oldest licensed official, died Jan. 13 at the age of 96. Born into a racing family in Latonia, Ky., Bellew worked in various capacities in the sport until August 2004 at River Downs.
Bellew served as state steward, clerk of scales, and paddock judge at River Downs, and also worked at tracks in Kentucky, Florida, and Louisiana. Bellew attended the festivities during last year's Miller Lite Cradle Stakes at River Downs.
Bellew, whose father was a trainer and official starter, witnessed Seabiscuit's two races at River Downs.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, 11 E. Southern Ave., Latonia, Ky.
