Major Broodmare Premium Win Euthanized

Premium Win, dam of champion Tight Spot and third dam of 2006 grade I winner Premium Tap, was euthanized in mid-November at age 25 at the Winchell family's Corinthia Farm near Lexington because of complications of colic.

Sired by leading turf stallion Lyphard, Premium Win was bred in Kentucky by the late Verne H. Winchell and sent to France to race. "She had an ankle that turned, and I figured since she was by Lyphard, she might do better in France," said farm manager David Fiske. "French trainer Andre Fabre came by the farm to take a look and liked her."

Sent to France, Premium Win was twice stakes-placed as a 2-year-old in 1983, including a runner-up effort in the group III Prix du Calvados. Following her return to North America, she equaled the world-record of 1:01 3/5 for 5 1/2 furlongs at Sacramento and won the Vacaville Stakes at Solano. Premium Win, who was trained in the U.S. by Greg Gilchrist and later by Ron McAnally, retired with five wins from 21 races and earnings of $82,137.

Premium Win, whose second dam, Mira Femme, was 1966 co-champion 2-year-old filly for Winchell, hit the big time right away as a broodmare. Tight Spot, her first foal, was 1991 champion turf male for Winchell and partners. His stakes wins that year included victories in the Arlington Million Stakes (gr. IT) and Eddie Read Handicap (gr. IT) on his way to career earnings of $1.5 million for McAnally. A son of His Majesty, Tight Spot stood at stud in Japan before being sent to China.

The His Majesty/Premium Win combination clicked again in the form of the colt Valiant Nature. Trained by McAnally, Valiant Nature won the 1993 Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) and was grade II stakes-placed at 3. He stands at Naylee Farm in West Virginia.

Premium Wind produced a dozen foals, five of which were winners, including stakes-placed filly Comstock Queen. Another daughter, Phylomina, is the granddam of Premium Tap. A son of Pleasant Tap, Premium Tap won the 2006 Clark Handicap (gr. I) and Woodward Stakes (gr. I).
