Suffolk Downs prepared to resume simulcasting Jan. 3 after the approval of enabling legislation by Massachusetts lawmakers late in the day Jan. 2. The bill, which offers a two-year extension for simulcasting, awaits the signature of outgoing Gov. Mitt Romney.
Suffolk and other tracks in the state were forced to close for two days after a simulcasting bill that passed the Senate was blocked by Rep. David Flynn in the House during the final informal legislative session of 2006.
"We appreciate the efforts of the leadership in the legislature in resolving this issue, and we regret the loss of work for our employees and any inconvenience this shutdown caused our patrons," Suffolk president John Hall. said
The Jan. 3 simulcast offerings would include Gulfstream Park's opening day. Live racing at Suffolk is scheduled to resume May 5.
