EHV-1 Update: Northern Cal Horsemen Await Test Results

The equine herpesvirus quarantine continued at three Bay Area tracks Dec. 31 as Northern California horsemen await test results that won't be known until after the New Year's weekend.

All 40 horses in Lloyd Mason's barn have been tested, according to Golden Gate Fields spokesman Tom Ferrall. Mason's Royal Brass, a 3-year-old gelding, became the first Thoroughbred at a California track to test positive for EVH-1 on Friday after showing neurological discomfort. Royal Brass remains at University of California-Davis' equine medical facility for treatment.

Following the races Dec. 31, Golden Gate Fields is dark until Jan. 4.

Dr. Rick Arthur, the state's equine medical director, spoke to horsemen at the Albany track on Dec. 30 to warn them to take such precautions as washing and sterilizing equipment.

He said the restrictions would remain in place a minimum of 10 days.

In addition to Golden Gate, Bay Meadows and Pleasanton's Alameda County Fairgrounds  are under quarantine. In all, about 2,100 horses are stabled at  the three facilities.

The horses can ship between the three affected tracks, but cannot travel elsewhere.
