Guy Roberts reported the loss of his prominent stallion Petersburg Dec. 22. The 20-year-old son of Danzig, who had been ill the past few months, stood at Roberts' Guy Bar Farm near Sunnyside, Wash.
Bred in Kentucky by Seahorse 85, Petersburg is represented by 20 stakes winners, including Washington champions Cocktails Anyone, Court's in Session, and Sabertooth. The last-named was named 2002 Horse of the Year and top older male after winning the Longacres Mile (gr. III) and Washington Championship Handicaps. In 2005, Sabertooth set a world record mark of 1:13 for 6 1/2 furlongs at Emerald Downs and was voted the state's champion sprinter.
Cocktails Anyone also was three-time champion. She was named top older female in 1997-98 and best sprinter the latter year. Court's in Session was voted 2004 top sprinter.
A $350,000 Saratoga yearling, Petersburg raced in France and North America, winning once, before entering stud at Roberts’ Guy Bar Farm in 1991. He was produced from the graded stakes-winning Icecapade mare Am Capable.
Petersburg is buried next to his paddock.
