Longshot Takin It Deep Takes Cal' Derby Over Early Flyer; Startac Fourth

Takin It Deep, running in last place after a half-mile, rallied to upset favored Early Flyer and Startac in the $200,000 California Derby at Bay Meadows Saturday. Early Flyer finished a half-length back in second, followed by Sirpa, Startac, Stocks Are Rising, Othersideofthehill, and Wa Dancer.

A 10-1 shot on the morning line, Takin It Deep was sent off at 21-1 under jockey Jose Arriaga and returned $44.20, $6.40, and $2.10 while topping an exacta worth $55.10. The Cal-bred son of Beau Genius--Here's Lookn Adder, by Superbity, stopped the timer after 1 1/8 miles run in 1:49.25 on a fast track. He earned $110,000 for owner M. A. Douzos with the win, his third in six starts and first in a stakes race. He is trained by Gil Matos and was bred by Billingsley Creek Ranch.

"It felt great to win. This is my biggest win ever," Arriaga said.

Early Flyer returned $2.40 and $2.10, and Sirpa paid $2.10 to show.
