(from Calder report)
Alice Muller’s 5-year-old Florida homebred mare Take D’Tour completes a highly successful 2006 campaign for Calder-based trainer David Fawkes as the horse to beat in the $100,000 Stage Door Betty Handicap (gr. III), where she faces six rival fillies and mares Saturday.
The 1 1/16-mile event is one of four $100,000 races on the Grand Slam III card on Saturday at Calder Race Course.
The chestnut daughter of Tour d’Or burst on the national stage this spring with back-to-back victories in the Shuvee Handicap (gr. II) and Ogden Phipps Handicap (gr. I) at Belmont Park, both one-turn races. Take D’Tour earned her first ever two-turn victory last out winning Calder’s Elmer Heubeck Distaff Nov. 11 by 3 3⁄4 lengths.
She carries top weight of 124 pounds, seven to 10 pounds more than her rivals.
An intriguing contender in the race is Katsumi Yoshida’s Argentine-bred 4-year-old filly Cursora, recently arrived at Palm Meadows for trainer Ken McPeek. John R. Velazquez will ride her. The chestnut daughter of Candy Stripes finished a game third last out in the Falls City Handicap (gr. II) at Churchill Downs on Nov. 23.
Completing the field for the Stage Door Betty are William Condren and Michael Sherman’s Running Lass, Charles Miller’s Potra Clasica, Strode Stable’s Sea Siren, Victoria Farm’s Amazing Speed and Robert C. Roffey, Jr.’s Tiger Belle.
