(From Santa Anita report)
Eleven 2-year-old fillies are set to go to the post Friday in Santa Anita’s $125,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, a seven-furlong event for California-breds that seems to be wide open.
Favoritism may go to Martin and Pam Wygod’s Double Major, a daughter of Bertrando trained by Doug O’Neill, an impressive winner of her only start by 1 3⁄4 lengths at Hollywood Park on Nov. 18. Corey Nakatani will ride again.
Swiss Diva, unbeaten in both of her races for conditioner Paddy Gallagher, appears to be a leading contender. Jockey Agapito Delgadillo has the call on the Swiss Yodeleroffspring for owners Rich and Sharon Waller.
The only stakes winner in the field is 122-pound high weight Prenuptial, who was victorious in Del Mar’s Generous Portion Stakes last summer. Victor Espinoza will ride the bay filly, who has won two of six starts for trainer Ben Cecil and owners David and Paula Mueller.
