Wilson Quickly Finds Fair Grounds' Win Circle

It didn't take top Canadian jockey and North America's 2005 Eclipse Award-winning apprentice rider Emma-Jayne Wilson long to visit the winner's circle at Fair Grounds.

She accomplished that mission Friday her first day of riding competitively at the New Orleans oval aboard her second mount of the afternoon on Ryan Beattie's Trion Georgia in the fourth race.

Wilson, the first female to ever be leading rider at Woodbine Race Course outside Toronto, won Canada's Sovereign Award as that nation's leading apprentice in 2005. She added the Eclipse Award shortly thereafter, and then was presented with her second Sovereign Award as leading apprentice north of the border in ceremonies in Toronto last Saturday evening.

Wilson, 25, born and raised in Brampton, Ontario, becomes the second straight Eclipse Award-winning apprentice to ride at Fair Grounds during the winter immediately after winning the award. Brian Hernandez Jr., who has ridden here the last three winters, won the 2004 award.
