A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in south-central Louisiana Dec. 13 caused the death of Jerri Nichols-Leblanc, a 35-year-old jockey who predominantly rode at Louisiana racetracks.
According to the
Daily Advertiser of Lafayette, La., Louisiana State Police said the accident occurred when a Chevrolet Suburban driven by 38-year-old Kirk Leblanc, a jockey and Jerri Leblanc's husband, left the highway, traveled onto the shoulder, and struck the rear of an 18-wheel trailer parked there.
The newspaper reported Jerri Leblanc died from injuries suffered in the crash. Kirk Leblanc was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. A release from the state police said officials don't believe Kirk Leblanc was impaired, the newspaper reported.
Jerri Leblanc was a regular rider at Delta Downs Racetrack & Casino and Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino, and also rode at Fair Grounds.
She also rode at Hoosier Park when the Indiana track opened in the mid-1990s.
