Wren, a daughter of Elusive Quality   believed to be in foal to Maria's Mon, was purchased by Denise Dommel for $85,000 to top the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December mixed sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium on Sunday.

A 6-year-old mare consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Rick Abbott's Charlton, Wren is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner and stakes producer Buffels and to three stakes-place runners.

Fasig-Tipton reported 171 horses sold for $1,117,600, compared with a gross of $1,759,400 for the 201 sold during the comparable session one year ago.

The session average of $6,536 represented a 25% decline from the $8,753 in 2005, and the median price was unchanged at $3,700.

The 94 horses that did not attain their reserves represented 35% of the total through the ring, compared with an RNA rate of 34% last year.

The sale concludes Monday with a session beginning at 10 a.m.
