Retired Jockey Willie Clark Dead
Willie Clark, who at one time was the oldest jockey to win a race, died Nov. 25 in Charles Town, W.Va. He was 84.Clark set the record at Charles Town in 1991 when he was 69. That year, he was inducted into the track's Hall of Fame, joining among others national Hall of Fame rider Bill Hartack.Clark, who started riding in 1945, was considered a part of Charles Town history. On his birthday in 1989, the track distributed 2,500 T-shirts declaring "Home of Willie Clark, world's oldest jockey."After 46 years of riding at countless tracks, many long gone, Clark retired Sept. 6, 1991, with 1,143 wins from 10,630 rides and earnings of $1.8 million.Clark is survived by a grandson. The Charles Town Chaplaincy will be making the funeral arrangements.
