Siren Lure Faces Champion Declan's Moon in Underwood
Siren Lure, a sprint specialist who has won five of seven 2006 starts, meets Eclipse Award winner Declan's Moon in Saturday's $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood at Hollywood Park as the 2004 champion 2-year-old returns to the races following a 3 ½-month layoff. While Declan's Moon has only started three times since winning the 2004 Hollywood Futurity to clinch an Eclipse Award, Siren Lure has been a force, winning ten races the last two years and 12 of 21 lifetime.Siren Lure, a 5-year-old gelding, had a three-race winning streak snapped while finishing eighth in the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs. He won the Los Angeles Handicap in May at the Underwood distance of six furlongs, then stretched the streak to three with victories in the grade I Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park and the Pat O'Brien Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar. He has earned $769,909.The 5-year-old gelding will carry high weight of 126 pounds and break from the outside post under jockey Alex Solis in the six-horse Underwood, which lines up as follows:The field for the Vernon O. Underwood, in post position order: 1--Sailors Sunset, Jon Court, 118 2--Declan's Moon, Victor Espinoza, 122 3--Zanzibar, Garrett Gomez, 116 4--Premium Saltine, Tyler Baze, 118 5--Turnbolt, Corey Nakatani, 116 6--Siren Lure, Alex Solis, 126.Declan's Moon, undefeated in four starts at two, was discovered to have a lung infection after finishing seventh in the Pat O'Brien. Trainer Ron Ellis is now satisfied he is on track and hopes the Underwood is a springboard to bigger things in 2007. He enters the Underwood with five wins and a second in seven starts for earnings of $638,300. |
