Former New York Governor Hugh L. Carey has been elected to the board of Empire Racing, the group competing for the franchise to operate the state's racetracks at Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga.

Carey will serve as an independent director.

"Governor Carey adds a highly respected and independent voice for the not-for-profit racing community within our coalition," said Jeff Perlee, Empire Racing CEO. "He brings enormous stature and government experience to our board."

Carey has been a longtime fan and supporter of New York racing. He was the last New York governor to preside over a Triple Crown winner (Seattle Slew in 1977 and Affirmed in 1978) and was named Man of the Year by the Jockey Club.

As New York's governor, Carey successfully fought to maintain live racing at the Saratoga Race Course.

Carey served as governor from 1975-82 following seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
