Partnership Buys Back Street Sense's Half-Sister at Keeneland; Sells Bedazzle Privately
The partnership that owns the weanling half-sister to recent Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Street Sense bought back the Distorted Humor filly for $850,000 Friday during the fifth session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in Lexington. However, trainer Carl Nafzger, one of the partnership's members, reported that Bedazzle, the dam of the filly and Street Sense, had been sold privately earlier in the week to Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation.Nafzger declined to reveal the price for Bedazzle, a 9-year-old winning daughter of Dixieland Band. She is in foal to Speightstown ."We want to race her; we love her," said Nafzger after buying back the Distorted Humor filly. "We sold her dam, so we wanted to keep her. The (buy-back price) was right on top of our reserve. As a matter of fact, I got nervous. I was scared we were going to lose her. While we really wanted to keep her, we didn't want to get out of line (with the price). She's big, strong filly, and she looks a lot like Street Sense did at this time (as a weanling)."The other members of the partnership that owns the Distorted Humor weanling, which was consigned to the Keeneland sale by Calumet Farm, agent, are Randy Bloch (in whose name she was bred), Robert Manfuso, John Seiler, and Nafzger's wife, Wanda. When the filly goes to the races, she will be trained by Nafzger's former assistant Ian Wilkes, Nafzger said.Nafzger trains Street Sense for the colt's owner and breeder, Jim Tafel. Nafzger purchased Bedazzle, carrying the Distorted Humor filly, for $180,000 when Tafel sold her through Chesapeake Farm at last year's Keeneland November auction."We bought the mare to produce racehorses, but we got very fortunate that her first foal was Street Sense," Nafzger said. "She left Calumet Farm Wednesday and went to Darley."Street Cry, the sire of Street Sense, stands at Darley at Jonabell in Lexington.
