It's not Ali/Frazier but the Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 4 in Louisville, Ky., the hometown of former heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali, is being billed as a showdown between Bernardini and Lava Man.
Bernardini, from the East Coast, and Lava Man, from the West Coast, are featured on a promotional poster the Breeders' Cup will be plastering around the Lexington and Louisville areas. The two are among the 14 horses entered for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic - Presented by Dodge (gr. I), highlight of the eight-race program at Churchill Downs.
The poster will be distributed to bars, restaurants, and retail establishments. It features the two horses with the heading: The Mane Event, The Showdown at the Downs.
A tale of the tape is included and the poster calls Bernardini, a son of
A.P. Indy owned by Darley the "blue blood" and Lava Man, a gelding by
Slew City Slew the "blue collar" horse.
After losing his first start, Bernardini has ripped off six straight, while Lava Man, who was claimed in 2004 for $50,000, has won his last seven races.
