With nonstop rain pelting Churchill Downs on Friday morning, trainer Mark Casse called an audible and opted to leave Charles Laloggia's Skip Code in the barn rather than work in preparation for the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
The winner of Woodbine's Grey Breeders' Cup (gr. III) is now set for his only work over the one-mile oval at Churchill Downs during the weekend.
"He could really go without a work, because he had his big work last week (Oct. 21) at Woodbine," Casse said of the 1:00.20 work over the Polytrack that was the fastest of 91 at the distance. "He will gallop in the morning and then if the track is OK, he'll work Sunday morning, probably five-eighths."
Skip Code is a gray son of 1997 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Skip Away
who will attempt to provide Casse, who was based at Churchill Downs early in his career, with his first Breeders' Cup win.
Meanwhile, Fred Carrillo and Daniel Cassella's Bordonaro, the West Coast's top hope for the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), galloped over a "sloppy" track early Friday morning at Churchill Downs under regular exercise rider Chris Aplin.
Trainer Bill Spawr is keeping an eye on the weather with regard to Bordonaro's final work prior to the Sprint.
"He will work either Sunday or Monday and Chris would work him," Spawr said. "She has been his regular rider in the mornings for the past year and a half."
Bordonaro brings Spawr back to Churchill Downs for the first time since 1994, when he saddled Exchange in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I). Exchange finished seventh behind Leonard Lavin's long shot winner One Dreamer, whose 47-1 victory was one of the biggest upsets in the history of the event.
"Everything is going well," Spawr said. "He has been to the track the past three days, has settled in well and been eating up every day."
