Sheikh Mohammed has entered into an agreement to purchase 2005 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) winner Shirocco from breeder/owner Baron Georg von Ullmann and will stand the 5-year-old son of Monsun at his Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket, England, according to the Racing Post
. The German-bred Shirocco is scheduled to undergo a veterinary inspection.
Shirocco won both his English starts this year, including the group I Vodafone Coronation Cup over international champion filly Ouija Board, and took this year's Prix Foy Gray d'Albion Barriere (Fr-II). In what was his final start, he finished last in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere (Fr-I) Oct. 1.
Shirocco was a champion and group I winner in 2004 in Germany and Italy, winning the BMW 135 Deutsches Derby and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club. Trained first by Andreas Schutz and later by Andre Fabre, Shirocco retired with seven wins from 13 races and earnings of $2,477,588.
His dam, 2005 German Broodmare of the Year So Sedulous (by The Minstrel), has produced four other stakes winners.
