Canani Aims for NetJets Mile with Shining Energy
Grade I-winning filly Shining Energy will be pre-entered for the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT), trainer Julio Canani reported Oct. 18, rather than the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT).Canani said the distance of the 1 3/8-mile Filly & Mare Turf was the deciding factor. Both races are at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4. "(The Filly and Mare Turf) is too far for her," Canani said. "We hope she'll get in. She has a group I win and 10 (Breeders' Cup) points so that should be good enough."Shining Energy, who is expected to ship to Kentucky Oct. 31, worked seven furlongs in 1:29 2/5 over a firm Santa Anita turf course on Wednesday."It was just a little breeze," Canani said. "Next week she'll do more. I'll probably work her on the dirt next week and then on the turf again for her last work before she leaves for Kentucky."Shining Energy, who won the Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park in May, has gone unplaced in her two starts in graded stakes company since. Canani is hopeful that the Kentucky-bred daughter of Rahy will redeem herself in time to pass through the sales ring at the Fasig-Tipton November the day after the World Thoroughbred Championships."She's a very good filly," Canani said of the 4-year-old chestnut. "The Mile will be a tough race but I think she's good enough to be competitive."Shining Energy began her career racing in France. She has won five of 17 career starts for owners Terrence Lanni and Bernard Schiappa, with three seconds and a third, for earnings of $536,837. She also won the 2005 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT) and two other non-graded stakes events.
