Brunilda brings back-to-back stakes wins into Friday night's $150,000 Violet Stakes (gr. IIIT) on the turf at the Meadowlands.
A total of 10 fillies and mares were entered in the 30th edition of the Violet, a 1 1/16-mile grass test.
Three of the entrants are returnees from last year, including last year's 28-1 upset winner Humoristic. The Hamilton Smith trainee, who will be joined in the race by stablemate Art Fan, has not won a race since her Violet victory.
Brunilda, who finished third in the 2005 Violet, enters Friday's race off wins in the Politely and Eatontown Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park. Trained by Stan Hough, 6-year-old Brunilda also won the Navajo Princess last season at the Meadowlands. She will break from post nine with rider Eddie Castro in the Violet and is rated at 5-2 on the morning line.
"She's been acting really good coming into this race," Hough said. "Her last couple of races have been the best of her career.
Smart N Classy, who finished tenth in 2005, will try to turn her luck around in this year's Violet for trainer John Tammaro III. Of the contenders in the Violet field, Smart N Classy carries the most experience racing under the lights at the Meadowlands. The 6-year-old mare has a Meadowlands-only record of two wins, one second and one third in seven starts. Lifetime, she has won seven of 36.
No Sleep, who captured the Iowa Distaff Breeders' Cup and the Fort Monmouth Stakes in her last two outs, is rated as the 2-1 morning line favorite; however, the Bruce Levine trainee is entered for the main track only. $150,000 Violet Stakes (gr.
