Welfare and Safety Summit Begins Monday at Keeneland

The Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit opens Monday at Keeneland in Lexington with a session of presentations and panel discussions that will be open to the public. The session, which will be held in the Keeneland sale pavilion, will run from 8 a.m. (EDT) until noon.

The summit, coordinated and underwritten by The Jockey Club and Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and hosted by the Keeneland Association, will include a cross-section of more than 40 racing industry representatives.

The presenters and their presentations during Monday morning's public session will be as follows:'
Dr. Larry Bramlage, "Evolution of the Average Lifetime Starts and Average Years Raced of Northern American Thoroughbred Foal Crops."
Dr. Rick Arthur, "Trends in Thoroughbred Racing by the Numbers."
Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, "Joint Trauma and Osteoarthritis (DJD) -- A Major Cause of Attrition in Thoroughbred Racehorses."
Dr. Michael "Mick" Peterson, "Extending the Careers of Racehorses Through Engineered Racing Surfaces."
Dr. Sue Stover, "Risk Factors for Musculoskeletal Injuries" and "Race Surface Preliminary Findings."

The panelists will be Rollin Baugh, James G. Bell, Dr. Tom Brokken, Bill Casner, Michael Dickinson, Seth Hancock, John Harris, Dick Mandella, Nick Nicholson, Dr. Hiram Polk, Richard Shapiro, Mike Smith, Ric Waldman, John Ward, Jesse Wigginton, and Eual Wyatt.
