Garrett Gomez, who rode two Breeders' Cup World Championship winners last year at Belmont Park, has been named to ride Perfect Drift in the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I), trainer Murray Johnson said Tuesday.
"We had been in contact with him before the last race and it didn't work out," Johnson said. "He was available this time and we feel it's the best thing to do. He's ridden for us before, years ago, so we have a relationship there. Anytime you can get a leading rider like Garrett you have to take advantage of it. Everything is coming around well, and we feel race is setting up right for him, with a lot of speed among the main contenders."
Last year, Gomez piloted Stevie Wonderboy to victory in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), and took the NetJets Mile (gr. IT) aboard Artie Schiller.
"Garrett rode for us when he was riding in the Midwest, and in fact, was aboard when Proven Cure broke his maiden at Arlington by eight lengths in a one-turn mile," said Bryan Reed, son of Stonecrest Farm owner Dr. William Reed. "He is certainly riding well right now, and we are excited to have him up."
Perfect Drift, who finished a fast-closing second in the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) with Julien Leparoux up in his last start, will be making an unprecedented fifth appearance in the Classic, having finished third last year and fourth in 2004. The son of Dynaformer
has bankrolled over $4.6 million in his career.
